Even though some softwares can calculate deductions from pay such as pensions and employer loans, data of every employee to whom they apply need to be entered. Backup copies of the payroll data must be kept by the employer, at least one of which has to be kept in an off site and with security.

Monthly and weekly pay intervals are set, but if there are different requirements, the employer should check that these are supported. He must also check whether the software can handle pension scheme administration.

Holiday entitlements recordings and calculations, self service which allows employees to request or book annual leave online, and tracking medical leave are additional features that maybe provided by some softwares.

Before buying any payroll software, the user must check if it can print on regular stationery or if a special paper is required and the cost for the same.

Payroll systems can provide information electronically and update nominal ledgers and other reports or it can provide the information on paper.

A dependable supplier must be chosen.

The payroll software should be accredited under the HM revenue and customs payroll standard accreditation scheme. Supplier should be in a position to provide continuous, regular updates for the software which can be rolled back in case of any problems.

Good support is extremely necessary due to the critical nature of payroll operations. Support levels such as the cost and response time of the supplier must be checked out.

I personally use a program called Cashbook Plus for my small business bookkeeping software as it is easy and straight forward to use. Plus with my business I don't need anything too complex and I can't afford to waste time with a whole heap of stuff I don't need. I think for most small businesses that Cashbook will do the job. Of course there are so many variables with what businesses need it's hard to say exactly if this is for you or not but it should be a good starting point for you. I think it makes the perfect small business bookkeeping software and you can download a demo fro their site to see how it works.
